More than 300 Newell Elementary School students proudly waving their American flags sat “criss-cross applesauce” singing songs honoring veterans who valiantly served our country.

Children gleefully sang several patriotic songs.

“Yankee Doodle Dandy”

“This Land is Your Land”

“My Country ‘Tis of Thee”

“You’re A Grand Old Flag”

The 8th Annual Patriotic Sing-Along was hosted by Barry Rosenzweig and John Tracy of Post NJ-03 of the Veterans of the Vietnam War and The Veterans Coalition.

They spoke to students about veterans and the meaning of Memorial Day.

“On Monday, we celebrate Memorial Day. That’s a very special day for all veterans.  A veteran is someone who put on a military uniform and went off to protect all of us,” Barry Rosenzweig said.

Waving their Grand Old Flags!

Mr. Rosenzweig added, “We gather on Memorial Day to honor all veterans who served our country and particularly those who lost their lives. We greatly appreciate all they have done.”

Mr. Rosenzweig asked students if they knew the five different Branches of Military Service and was very impressed that the kids named them all; Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and the Coast Guard.

Allentown Mayor Greg Westfall, Borough Councilman John Elder and Veteran Dr. Reno Zinzarella were recognized as guests of honor.

On Memorial Day and every day, let us honor the veterans who have served and those who have given their lives to protect our freedoms.
